Is Your Mama a Llama?

Materials

Book:  Is Your Mama a Llama? 
Shockwave Plug-In  
drawing paper 
pencil 
crayons or markers

 

Before You Read 

Today you will be reading the book Is Your Mama A Llama?  This is a rhyming book that matches animal babies to their mothers.  Do the following activities before you read the story.

Activity One:  Animal Mother and Baby Names 

Print out the chart that you see when you click on the highlighted word. After you have printed your chart, click here to go to a web site that shows the names of animal mothers and their babies.  Find the section for the animals listed on your printed chart.  Fill in the information about these animals on your chart.  Look over the information carefully.  You will be reading about these animals in the story.

Activity Two:  Draw a Llama

Visit this site that shows what a llama's body looks like.  Look over the drawing.  After you have looked at the llama picture carefully, draw your own picture of a llama.  Remember to add color to your picture to make it your best work!   

While You Read

Begin reading the book.  While you are reading, you will come across the following words: politely, grazes, grin, herd, and responded.  You will need to find out what these words mean.  You may use the on-line dictionary to look up the meanings of these words.

After You Read

After you have read the story, complete each of the following activities.

Activity One: Animal Riddles

Click on the highlighted word to get to the Animal Riddle paper.  Print out this paper.  Answer the following riddles about animals. 

Activity Two: Who Is Your Mama?

Think about how each baby animal described his/her mother to Lloyd, the baby llama.  On a piece of paper, write a short description of your mother or an adult woman friend.

Activity One: Llama Cam

Visit the barnyard of some REAL LLAMAS.  You can use this site to send E-Mail to the people who run the llama farm.
