Before You Read
Activity one:  Kindness and generosity are qualities that Johnny Appleseed exhibited.  Think about how acts of kindness can reap unexpected rewards.  Read the short story From the Elephant Pit and answer the questions at the end to the story.  Remember to use complete sentences.

Activity two:  During pioneer times, people told and retold stories since books were rare.  Tall tales are stories that have unbelievable parts or outcomes.   The Legend of Slappy Hooper is an example of a tall tale.  Listen to the story and think about what Slappy's next job might be.  Go to the web site and click on Hear Aaron Read.  You need to decide what Slappy's next painting job will be.  On a piece of paper, write three to four complete sentences describing Slappy’s next job and what happens when it comes to life.

Beyond What You Read

Activity one:  Johnny Appleseed began traveling through the forest of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana in the late 1700's.  While traveling through the forest, he lived among the wildlife and cared for the animals.  Explore a forest home and find what is hidden among the trees. After you enter the web site, click on the oak leaf to enter the forest.

Activity two:  I have selected some words from your story and created a word search.  You will complete the word search on the computer by clicking on the letters of the word.  Are you ready to play?  Click on word search.
