Materials Needed

• 1) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling 

• 2) Pencil or Pen

• 3) Writing Paper

• 4) Drawing Paper

• 5) Crayons or Colored Pencils

• 6) A Journal

• 7) Macromedia Flash Player

Before You Read

Before you begin reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone choose one of the following activities to complete:
 

1) In the story Harry suddenly finds himself attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The school is housed in an enormous castle. Visit this castle link and take a tour of your own castle. Be sure to click on the characters throughout the tour so that they can introduce themselves and tell you a little bit about castle life.

Afterward, write a journal entry about what it would be like to live in a castle.

• How would your life be different?
• What are some things you would like about living in a castle?
• What are some things that you would not like about living in a castle?
• Is there anything you learned that really surprised you?

2) When Harry arrives at his new school he learns that Quidditch is the favorite sport of all witches and wizards. The game is played while flying on broomsticks! Visit this Quidditch site that describes the game and its rules. Be sure to click on the Quidditch link in the column on the left.

Once you have read the entire page write a short one-page story about your own Quidditch game.

• What position did you play?
• What exciting things happened during the game?
• Who won the game and how?

As soon as your story is finished draw and color a picture of what you think a game of Quidditch would look like.

While You Read

You will need to complete the following activity while you are reading the book:
 

1)  Write character sketches of these characters that play important roles in the book.

Describe:

• Physical characteristics
• Personality traits
• Why do you think they are important to the story?

I expect one paragraph for each character. Be careful to include facts from the book to support any statements that you make.

After You Read

You must do all three of these activities:
 

1) What is the theme of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone? Check out this online dictionary to find out a little bit more about what theme is. I want you to write a journal entry that addressess each of the following questions.

• What is the theme?
• What evidence in the book supports your answer?
• What does the theme remind you of in your own life?

2)  For this activity I am asking you to pretend that you are a First-year at Hogwarts. Pretend that you have been there for 3 months now and are writing a friend or family member back home a letter. Here are some ideas:

• What classes are you taking, and which one is your favorite?
• What friends have you met there?
• What enemies have you met there?

Remember I want your thoughts and ideas. Also, your letter should be at least a page long. Be creative!
 

Beyond What You Have Read

You will need to complete one or more of the following activities in this section:
 

1) Go to this Harry Potter website and participate in the discussion group! Just fill out the form, enter your answer, and click submit. You can check back in about a week to see if your answer was posted!
 

2) Click here and play Harry Potter trivia! Find out how many questions you can answer correctly in a row. After you are finished submit a question of your own!

• Be careful to click on the quiz for the book we read and not one of the other two!
• You may have to download a Macromedia Flash Player to play this game. The player is right on the page, just follow the directions and you shouldn't have any problems.

3) Read this story about J.K. Rowling. Find out a little about this extraordinary author of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
 

4) Take this online quiz!

• Simply answer all ten questions and then click "submit."
