The Very
Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle
Materials
Before You Read
1. Define the words yesterday, today, and tomorrow. See if you
can tell me what the words mean before looking them up.
2. The caterpillar has something to eat each day of one week. Look
at the chart of one week, print, and predict what the caterpillar
had to eat and how much of each thing he ate by using your pencil and
crayons.
While You Read
After You Read
1. The caterpillar ate so much
that it turned into something
different. What did the caterpillar turn into? On
the other side of your
chart draw what the caterpillar turned into.
2. Tell me what happened in the story.
Make a chain of events
table like the one you see, and fill it in with the events that
happened in the story. Write what happened at the beginning,
in the middle, and at the end of the story.
Beyond What You Read
1. Using sign language, sign the days of the week; Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. After you sign
each day, use the alphabet chart and sign the word "caterpillar," your
name, the town/city you live in, your favorite color, or a special
phrase.
2. Send a postcard
of a butterfly to your e-mail pen pal, your
teacher, your parents/guardians, or your favorite author. Follow the
directions on the home page to send your postcard. Remember to
follow the letter format we use when writing letters. You also
must include something about The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
3. The caterpillar ate apples, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges, and
watermelon. Make a fruit
salad using several of the fruits
the caterpillar ate.
