Thunder At Gettysburg

Materials:
Pencil
Paper
Before You Read:
1. Visit a Civil War web site
to learn about the Battle
of Gettysburg and to look at pictures
from the battle site.
2. Answer the following questions
:
a. When was the Battle of Gettysbury fought?
b. Who was the general of the Confederate Army?
c. Who was the general of the Union Army?
d. Which side won the battle?
3. Create a double entry
journal page . On one side of your paper, predict what might happen during
this story based on the information you learned about the battle.Write
down at least two predictions.
After You Read:
1. Were your predictions about
the story correct? On the other side of your page write down what really
happened in the story.
2. Reread the
author's note on the last page of the book. Compare and contrast Tillie's
own words (Scroll down to "Memories of a teenage girl.") with
the author's interpretation of the her story.
3. Write down at least
two comparisons and two contrast statements. Which story do you like better?
A Step Beyond:
1. Now that you have read about
the Battle of Gettysburg from Tillie's point of view. What was the Civil
War like for the soldiers?
2. The Battle of Gettysburg
was a turning point in the Civil War.
President
Lincoln came to speak after the battle. Check out his speech.
Write a few sentences describing what you might have said if you were President
Lincoln.
